Visual Reality: Freebies: Wavefront OBJ Files

The files listed below can be imported and used in any program that supports Wavefront OBJ files. They are free for you to use for both commercial and non-commercial projects. I do ask, however, that you not redistribute them. If you know someone who would be interested in one of these models, please direct them to this site to download the file. This allows me to see which models are being downloaded most often so I have a better idea what types of models people would be most interested in having me create.

If you're looking for a specific model and don't see it here, or a model here is close but not quite what you're looking for, email me at andimn@gmail.com. Time and my skill level permitting, I'll certainly look into creating the model for you. Some of the models on this page are the result of requests like that. I'm also always interested to see the images that people create using my models, so please feel free to drop me a line with a link to your artwork.

At this time, there are no textures available for these files, so you will need to create your own.

Click the link below to download the zip file, then extract it to a location on your computer. You can then import it into your graphics program. If you have any questions or problems with any of the files or models on this page, please email me at andimn@gmail.com.

Abacus

The original calculator, an abacus consists of rods and beads, or "counters", in a frame. The rods and counters in this model are all separate pieces so you can move the counters into different positions or even remove any rods or counters that you want.

Acorn

Unless you have a perfectly manicured lawn, if you have oak trees, then acorns scattered under them is a familiar sight. The cap and acorn in this model are two separate pieces so you can have acorns with the cap, ones without, and even just the cap alone in your scene.

Chalkboard

Ah, the familiar old chalkboard! Brings back memories of the first day of school, when the teacher wrote his name on it in dusty white chalk, or later when the names of "troublesome" students were listed in the upper left corner. This model has the board in a recessed frame and has a tray for chalk and erasers (not included).

Fedora

The classic 1920's fedora. Staple of gangsters and private eyes alike. The band and hat in this model are one piece, and the model is two-sided so you can texture the inside, too.

Finishing Nail

Just a simple finishing nail. In real life they're designed to be invisible when the work is done, but you could use this one to add some detail to your image.

Flathead Screw

If you're not sure what the difference is, a flathead or slot-head screw has a single slot, and a Phillips- or cross-head screw has two slots creating a plus shape. This model is for a flathead screw, and is a good companion to the finishing nail. What workshop doesn't have both?

Key

Modeled after a simple house key, this model could be used to lock, unlock, or start anything. It is grooved on both the front and back, just like a real key.

Pan pipes

Also known as the panflute, syrinx, or quills, pan pipes are an ancient, though familiar, musical instrument. The pipes on this model are each separate pieces.

Shillelagh

Tired of just giving Michael or Vicky a sword? Looking for something a bit different? Try this Irish shillelagh model. The leather thong, draped over the fighter's wrist to help keep from dropping it in battle, is a separate piece from the club itself, allowing you to pose the two separately.

Whistle

A classic sports whistle, the "ball" inside is a separate piece so you can position it higher or lower or even remove it altogether.
