The weather was beautiful, the walk was exhilarating, and the cause was good. This morning I left the comforting glow of my computer monitor, laced up my walking shoes, and headed out to Grimsley H.S., in Greensboro, NC, for the 2007 Human Race.

As in years past, I walked to raise money for the Animal Rescue & Foster Program, an all-volunteer, non-profit group that rescues, fosters, and finds good, loving homes for stray and orphaned dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. ARFP gets no funding from federal, state, or local government, or from the United Way, so fundraisers like the Human Race are critical for us to keep saving homeless pets.

As promised, I'm providing photographic evidence that I walked the full 5K (that's 3.1 miles for non-metric folks). According to my pedometer, I actually walked 3.36 miles, so I must have picked up some extra distance somewhere. But I completed the whole course, and it felt great -- until tomorrow, I'm sure, when my muscles will start screaming. But it was worth it!

Thank you to everyone who has already sent in a donation sponsoring me. I haven't made my goal of $500 yet, though! I've got until April 1, 2007 to collect and turn in sponsorship donations, so there's still time for you to help me help the animals.

You can sponsor me online at www.arfpnc.com/human_race.htm .

Or you can send a check to:

Animal Rescue & Foster Program
P.O. Box 77393
Greensboro, NC 27417

If you send a check, make it payable to The Human Race, and write "ARFP -- sponsoring Andi Newton" in the memo section.

After April 1st, you can still help by making a tax-deductible donation directly to ARFP. Mail checks (payable to ARFP) to the address above, or visit the ARFP website to donate online.

Thanks again!

Andi

Before the walk. That pedometer won't read 0.00 for long!

At the one mile mark. A third of the way through, and still feeling good!

The two mile mark. Okay, starting to feel a little tired at this point -- but no way I was stopping!

The finish line in sight!

At the finish line. The time clock got cut off in this picture, but I finished the 5K walk in 1 hour, 13 minutes. Not bad!

At the end, with my pedometer proudly displaying 3.36 miles!
